About Ren
Born in Tokyo and raised partly in South Korea, Ren Otani grew up in an international environment, attending international schools throughout his academic life. His multicultural upbringing exposed him to different educational systems, cultures, and approaches to learning, ultimately shaping his perspective on the possibilities and limitations of conventional education.
From an early age, Otani demonstrated a strong interest in entrepreneurship, technology, and intellectual problem-solving. Fascinated by the potential of technology to transform society, he aspired to establish his own company from childhood. He eventually returned to Tokyo to pursue that ambition, beginning his entrepreneurial journey in the field of educational technology.
Today, Otani is the founder of 株式会社NEXAGROUP, a Japanese technology company focused on developing AI-powered educational infrastructure. His work centers on redefining how education is delivered, with the goal of making high-quality, personalized learning accessible to students regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.
Early life & heritage
Otani comes from the historic Otani family lineage, with family connections to the heritage of the Hotel New Otani group, one of Japan's most recognized luxury hospitality institutions. Although his family no longer maintains direct corporate ties to the hotel group, longstanding personal relationships remain within its broader network.
His family background also includes historical connections to the Fushimi-no-miya branch of Japan's former imperial princely families, traditionally associated with landownership and influential circles in Japanese society.
Raised between Japan and South Korea and educated in international schools, Otani developed an appreciation for both Japanese traditions and global perspectives. This intersection of heritage, international experience, and modern ambition continues to influence his entrepreneurial philosophy.
NEXAGROUP
Otani began his entrepreneurial career by establishing NEXAGROUP through a Delaware-incorporated company in the United States.
The company's initial focus was the development of a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) educational platform designed for international schools. Its core product was an AI-powered browser extension that schools could subscribe to and deploy across their student populations.
The technology was designed to analyze student learning behaviors, engagement patterns, and educational data to help institutions better understand individual learning needs and improve educational outcomes.
Integrated AI tutoring capabilities provided students with contextual academic assistance based on their on-screen learning activities, while offering educators additional insights to support instruction and personalized learning.
According to the company's reported figures, its subscription network expanded to more than 4,000 international schools across Asia.
NEXAGROUP has also pursued collaboration with international school accreditation organizations to encourage broader institutional adoption and the development of data-informed educational infrastructure.
Through these initiatives, Otani aims to build a comprehensive understanding of how students learn, allowing educators and institutions to develop more responsive, efficient, and equitable learning environments.
Expansion into Japan
As NEXAGROUP expanded, Otani initiated a strategic transition from its original American corporate structure to a Japan-based entity, 株式会社NEXAGROUP.
The transition involves winding down the original Delaware corporation and consolidating the company's future operations and long-term development in Japan.
Working alongside Japanese investors and prominent private capital networks across Asia, Otani has raised millions of dollars to support the company's growth and broader educational ambitions.
As of September 2026, the company's stated estimated valuation reached US$2.4 billion.
During the company's fundraising journey, Otani also received interest from prominent international venture capital figures, including direct outreach from Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). Although discussions did not culminate in a finalized investment agreement, the relationship has reportedly remained positive.
Today, Otani continues to work with influential investors and business leaders across Asia, bringing together private capital, educational institutions, and emerging technologies to advance the future of education.
A modern terakoya
At the center of Otani's entrepreneurial philosophy is a vision inspired by the Japanese terakoya (寺子屋), the community-based educational institutions that played an important role in broadening access to education during Japan's Edo period.
Historically, terakoya represented a localized and accessible approach to education, often emphasizing individualized instruction and practical learning.
Otani believes that the principles underlying this traditional Japanese educational model can be reinterpreted through modern artificial intelligence and educational technology.
His vision is to establish a modern form of terakoya in which every student receives an education tailored to their individual abilities, needs, learning pace, and interests.
Rather than requiring students to adapt to a standardized instructional system, Otani envisions an educational infrastructure capable of adapting to each student.
Through NEXAGROUP, he seeks to develop technology that allows personalized education to be delivered consistently and at scale, reducing disparities in educational quality between institutions and socioeconomic backgrounds.
His ultimate ambition is to make high-quality individualized education a universal standard in Japan and, eventually, throughout Asia.
His guiding belief is that personalized education should not be a privilege reserved for a select few, but a fundamental opportunity available to every student.
Intellectual pursuits
Throughout his academic years, Otani demonstrated a strong interest in scholarship, research, and intellectual competition.
During his studies at international schools, he received consecutive valedictorian distinctions, reflecting his academic achievements.
His interests extended beyond conventional coursework into political science, philosophy, and the study of social institutions.
He collaborated with Professor Bernard E. Harcourt of Columbia University on a political science research paper, which was published in connection with Columbia University. His work was also featured in Telos, extending its reach into broader academic and intellectual discussions.
A member of Mensa, Otani has reported an IQ of 159. Since childhood, he has been particularly drawn to logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and complex problem-solving.
This enthusiasm led him to participate in competitive puzzle-solving activities, including Rubik's Cube competitions and other intellectually demanding pursuits.
His interest in the relationship between human cognition, intelligence, and learning continues to inform his work in artificial intelligence and educational technology.
Social impact
Beyond his entrepreneurial activities, Otani has pursued initiatives focused on poverty alleviation, homelessness, and social inclusion.
He developed a nonprofit-oriented technology initiative involving an application designed to support homeless individuals, single mothers, and economically disadvantaged communities in Okinawa and New York City.
The project sought to use digital technology to improve access to assistance, community resources, and support networks for individuals facing financial and social instability.
As part of this work, Otani collaborated with Dr. Sam Tsemberis, a prominent advocate for the Housing First approach to homelessness, to explore opportunities for expanding the initiative's reach and impact.
His humanitarian efforts received recognition through a letter of appreciation from New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
These experiences reinforced Otani's belief that technology should serve a broader social purpose, helping reduce structural inequalities and expanding access to opportunities for underserved communities.
This philosophy remains closely connected to his work in education, where he seeks to address disparities in access to high-quality learning.
Music & creative life
Otani's interests have extended beyond academics and entrepreneurship into classical music, fashion, and creative expression.
Growing up, he studied classical piano and participated in competitive piano performances and competitions. His musical achievements include performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City and receiving the Young Chopin Award, reportedly becoming its youngest recipient at the time.
Alongside his musical pursuits, Otani explored the fashion and modeling industry in Japan.
Represented by Bravo Models Japan, he participated in modeling and promotional projects associated with internationally recognized luxury and creative brands.
His experience includes work connected to Guerlain Paris's exhibition activities in Japan, event and public relations photography for Byredo Japan, and promotional modeling for OCEAN TOKYO's Harajuku salon.
While these experiences contributed to his creative and personal development, Otani's current professional focus remains firmly centered on entrepreneurship and the transformation of education through NEXAGROUP.
Looking ahead
Otani's long-term vision extends beyond building a successful technology company.
He seeks to contribute to a fundamental transformation in the way educational opportunities are distributed, beginning in Japan and expanding throughout Asia.
By combining artificial intelligence, educational research, institutional partnerships, and private investment, he aims to create an infrastructure in which students receive individualized academic support without the financial and institutional barriers traditionally associated with personalized education.
Inspired by Japan's historical terakoya system, Otani believes the future of education lies in combining the accessibility of traditional community-based learning with the capabilities of modern technology.
Through NEXAGROUP and his ongoing work with investors, educators, and institutional partners, he is pursuing a future in which educational quality is no longer determined primarily by geography, wealth, or institutional prestige.
For Otani, the objective is not simply to modernize existing classrooms, but to fundamentally reconsider what education can become.
His mission is to make personalized, high-quality education the standard for everyone.
